Anthony Culverwell aka Mr Switch (and formerly DJ Switch) was inspired to take up DJ’ing – first as a hobby, subsequently as a profession – after watching a video of the DMC DJ Championships. It is the world’s longest running competition of its’ kind, starting off as a simple DJ mix battle in the mid-80’s. It has evolved into an Olympics-style event for scratching & turntablism, showcasing the most amazing things it is possible to do with turntables. And Mr Switch has gone from being a fan of these championships, to winning them multiple times over.

Anthony began entering competitions aged just 12, and his first DMC regional heat aged 14. After years of gradual improvement, he finally claimed his first national title aged 17, winning the 2006 UK Battle For Supremacy. This is a category of competition where DJs go head-to-head, battling each other in quarter & semi finals, until the last man standing is crowned the winner. It is very similar to rap battles or boxing matches – DJs get 2 rounds each to throw scratches, juggles, body tricks & insults at their opponents in an attempt to win.

DJ Switch managed to retain his UK title not once but twice, and stayed as the reigning UK champion for 3 consecutive years.

The winner of every national competition automatically proceeds to the world finals – and on his third visit there, Anthony finally achieved what he never thought possible. He took the title of DMC Battle For World Supremacy Champion 2008, beating off competitors from 26 countries, and became a world champion for the first time. And like his UK titles, he successfully defended his crown, and stayed as reigning world champion for 3 consecutive years in total, retiring undefeated in 2010.

The DMC’s Battle For Supremacy was an offshoot of the main competition – simply called the World DJ Championship, the category that has been running for more than 30 years. In that time, such hip hop luminaries as Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, DJ Craze & DJ Kentaro have taken the title. Returning to competition life, and after months of intense work & practise, the now re-named Mr Switch followed in the footsteps of these greats. Winning his 4th world title, and gaining a one-off gold-plated mixer, Mr Switch is the 2014 World DJ Champion!
